MICHIGAN YOUTH ENSEMBLES

Jazz Improvisation

This is a course for dedicated and able musicians with an interest in jazz improvisation.  The focus of the program

includes developing the skills and understanding necessary to perform in the jazz idiom.  Emphasis will be placed

on aural musicianship and the analysis of representative songs and artists.  Topics will include:

• Jazz theory/harmony
• Rhythm and swing
• Form
• Transcription
• Listening
• Composition
• History/philosophy
• Playing skills

  

Class structure is performance based.  Each semester will culminate in a public performance featuring large and small groups, and original compositions.

If you missed the March 31 application deadline, YOU CAN STILL APPLY. 

A September 14, 2008 audition date has been set.  We encourage you to use our online application process.  If you are

unable to do so, application and brochure can be downloaded.  You may apply anytime, but no later than September 8, 2008.  Applications must be received by this date!

MYE Application Deadline - March 31, 2008

Audition Dates - April 13 and 15 (see Audition Requirements)

                Audition waived for 2007-2008 Jazz Imprvisation members ONLY

Students will be notified of audition results no later than June 1, 2008

  9 Fall Sundays, 2008:       September 28, October 5, 12, 19, 26; November 2, 9, 16, 23*
10 Winter Sundays, 2009:  January 18, 25; February 1, 8, 15, 22; March 1, 8, 15, 22*

Encourage family and friends to attend.  All performances are FREE and open to the public; no tickets are required.
