Audition Requirements

SINGERS and INSTRUMENTALISTS (other than percussionists) should prepare one classical solo that demonstrates their best level of both technical and expressive abilities. This selection need not be more than 3 minutes in duration.  An accompanist will be provided for SINGERS.  INSTRUMENTALISTS should include a second piece, or an additional movement, if one piece does not demonstrate contrasting styles.

PERCUSSIONISTS should prepare 3 solo pieces or etudes that show proficiency on snare drum, a mallet instrument, and timpani.

ALL PERCUSSIONISTS must bring their own sticks.

JAZZ IMPROVISATION (instrumentalists and singers) should perform the melodies and improvise on 2-3 jazz standards in varying styles, such as blues, ballad, up tempo swing, modal, funk, etc.  This may be done with or without accompaniment.  Students less experienced in jazz may substitute a piece written in a jazz style.  Drummers should be prepared to keep time and solo in a variety of styles.  Bass players should be prepared to walk a line over standards of varying styles, and play melodies and improvise if possible.

(Only 2007-2008 returning Jazz Improvisation members will not be required to audition.)

Sight reading/sight singing will be required of ALL APPLICANTS
