Auditions
2013-14 Season Audition Dates
The application deadline for the September 15th auditions is September 1, 2013.
Please Note: There is no difference in placement consideration between the April and September auditions.
Band / Symphony Orchestra
Strings: September 15, 1:00-4:00 PM
Percussion: September 15, 2:00-4:30 PM
Woodwinds: September 15, 1:00-4:00 PM
Brass: September 15, 1:00-4:00 PM
Jazz Improvisation
All Participants: September 15, 1:30-3:30 PM
Returning 2012-2013 Jazz Improvisation Ensemble members must submit a 2013-14 application. Audition is waived.
Chamber Singers & Women’s Chorale
All Vocalists: September 15, 1:00-4:00 PM
Audition Requirements
Singers and Instrumentalists should prepare one classical solo that demonstrates their best level of both technical and expressive abilities. This selection need not be more than 3 minutes in duration. Instrumentalists should include a second piece or additional movement if one piece does not demonstrate contrasting styles. An accompanist will be provided for singers only. It is preferred that instrumentalists play without accompaniment.
Percussionists should prepare 3 solo pieces or etudes that show proficiency on snare drum, a mallet instrument, and timpani. Sticks/mallets not provide; you must bring your own.
Jazz Improvisation (instrumentalists and singers) should perform the melodies and improvise on 2-3 jazz standards in varying styles, such as blues, ballad, up tempo swing, modal, funk, etc. This may be done with or without accompaniment. Students less experienced in jazz may substitute a piece written in a jazz style. Drummers should be prepared to keep time and solo in a variety of styles. Bass players should be prepared to walk a line over standards of varying styles, and play melodies and improvise if possible.
Sight reading/sight singing will be required of all applicants.
