Trombone Institute

Description

Guest Director for the Institute will be Dr. James Layfield, Instructor of Low Brass at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Each participant will have one private lesson with U-M faculty Director, David Jackson.

This informative, college preparatory program is open to high school tenor and bass trombonists. Individual lessons, group lessons, and master classes will focus on the following:

  • A minimum of one private lesson each week
  • Daily master classes
  • Basic technique and musicianship
  • Development of good practice habits
  • College audition preparation
  • Performance anxiety
  • Solo and ensemble preparation
  • Solo and Trombone Choir performances
  • Individual practice time
  • Theory/musicianship classes
Application

The application consists of three parts. (Applications are not complete until the application fee has been received.)

Audition

Recording (Upload)

Submit a 3-5 minute long recorded audition of one or more pieces, with or without accompaniment (for example, a piece performed at Solo and Ensemble Festival, an etude, or an excerpt from something being played at school). The selection(s) should demonstrate both technical and lyrical skills.

 

Recommendation (Upload)

(Optional) You may have one of your current music teachers (school teacher or private teacher) assess your work in a letter of recommendation. In addition to your musical abilities, the letter may discuss your personal characteristics such as initiative, dependability, and your commitment to increasing your musical skills. To invite a recommender, submit your recommender's email address, when prompted, on the audition upload link. Once you submit your audition (by selecting Final Submit), the recommender will receive a notification and link to use for sending your confidential recommendation. E-mailed submissions will not be accepted.

 

Admissions
  • All application/audition materials are due by February 15, 2013
  • Late applications may be submitted, however priority will be given to all applications received by the application deadline
  • Notifications for all applicants will be e-mailed on March 29, 2013
  • No decisions will be given by phone
