Teaching Percussion Instruments
DATE:
July 14 – July 18, 2008
INSTRUCTOR:
Joseph Gramley, University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Professor Joseph Gramley’s workshop for the 2008 Master of Music in Music Education Summer Program will seek to impart a comprehensive approach to both technique and musicianship on percussion instruments. In our 21st Century ‘total percussion’ world, our students must have a broad base of knowledge and technique from which to adapt to the growing demands of percussionists. The participants in this workshop will set the foundation for these students. We will begin with issues of stroke/technique, which will lead us to developing our ‘sound’. Body placement and performance practice will be talked about in detail. Ways of including hand drums, ethnic instruments and world drums in the classroom will be introduced and developed. All of the above serving to lead our participants towards a comprehensive base of fundamentals on ALL percussion instruments.
