INSTRUCTOR:
Michael Haithcock, Rodney Dorsey, et al.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
This is a teaching workshop for instrumental music educators/conductors of all levels
(K-12 through University) with sessions on:
- Conducting
- Marching Band
- Rehearsal Techniques
- Jazz Ensemble
- Repertoire
- Curriculum in beginning, middle, & high school band pedagogy
The Advanced Track offers a select group of six conductors the opportunity to conduct a highly skilled chamber winds ensemble for forty minutes each day. The repertoire is selected from the finest available music for the medium and conductors are expected to interact with the ensemble in a professional rather than educational manner. This unique format incorporates movement principles with advanced conducting techniques and score study. Each participant is provided specific methodologies for personal development through feedback from the musicians, Jerry Schwiebert (movement expert), and Michael Haithcock (Director of Bands).
Selection for the Advanced Track is based on video taped audition.
Deadline for submission is May 1, 2009.
The Wind Pedagogy Track designed for the educator interested in improving their conducting and teaching skills. Morning sessions are taught by Michigan faculty in the areas of rehearsal techniques (jazz and concert band), score study, movement and expression, music education, and arranging. Participants will have two opportunities to conduct the Symposium Wind Band during afternoon conducting sessions.
Our goal during the week is to show you how to implement all conducting and teaching principals. The first twenty applicants are accepted; no video is required.
