The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance educates the artists, scholars, educators and entrepreneurs of the future. When nine U-M students began their journey to India with Prof. Stephen Rush in July, they thought they were going to learn about Indian classical music. But when they returned one month later, they also brought vast new knowledge about themselves and each other.
SMTD has partnered with the Gershwin family to bring the music of George and Ira Gershwin to students, scholars, performers and audiences across campus and worldwide.
Welcome to all new students beginning in Fall 2016! Classes begin Tuesday, September 6, 2016.
Orientation for undergraduate students is coordinated through the Office of New Student Programs (ONSP). Once your enrollment deposit is credited to your account, you will receive information from ONSP which will include details about how to register for your orientation session on-line. You must register and receive confirmation from ONSP in order to participate in orientation.
During the three-day program, students complete necessary procedures for class registration, including placement exams and academic advising. The first day of orientation is spent on Central Campus. Students then meet with SMTD staff, advisors, and current students on the afternoon of day two and the morning of day three.
You must attend an orientation session in order to register for classes.

Freshman orientation begins with the Office of New Student Programs (ONSP) and continues with the SMTD. Students (except for Dance & Theatre) will take a piano placement exam, and all will meet with academic advisors prior to registering for classes.

This transfer orientation begins with the Office of New Student Programs (ONSP) and continues with the SMTD. Transfer students will follow the Theory Placement schedule on the Graduate Orientation page.
There will be a final orientation offered August 31 through September 2, 2016 for all students who are unable to attend an orientation session throughout the summer.
All incoming undergraduate students are invited to attend the New Undergraudate Student Welcome Ceremony that will be held in Britton Recital Hall at 6:30 PM on Thursday, September 1.
