Academic Preparation
Prospective SMTD students must meet minimum GPA and SAT or ACT score requirements before an audition or interview will be granted. Each School or College at the University of Michigan has its own specific academic prerequisites. Dual degree applicants will be reviewed concurrently, but independently, for both programs.
The requirements below apply only to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

We expect freshman applicants to achieve the following:
- Graduation from an accredited high school.
- GPA of 3.0 or better (calculation based on 10th and 11th grade standard academic subjects.)
- Completion of the SAT with Writing or the ACT with Writing. Minimum score requirements are: ACT of 24 or better or SAT of 1100 or better in the Critical Reading and Math, or SAT of 1650 or better including Writing. Please note that the University does not accept rush scores. We require official test scores, sent to us by the agency; test scores included with a transcript are not sufficient. The Bachelor of Science in Sound Engineering requires a GPA of 3.5, an SAT math sub score of 580 or better, or an ACT math sub score of 28 or better.
- If you are a homeschooled or charter school student, you should submit records of your schooling progress AND results from at least two (2) SAT II exams and the SAT I writing test. If you'd like to talk with someone, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (734-764-7433) to discuss your qualifications for admission.
- General high school curriculum requirements demonstrated on an official transcript:
Academic: Four years of English, plus a minimum of 12 other year-long courses selected from social studies, foreign languages, sciences, mathematics or any combination of these subjects. 2 years of foreign language study is strongly recommended.
Performing Arts: Credits in music, theatre, and/or dance demonstrating experience and potential ability to succeed in the professional curriculum.
Admission as a transfer student from another accredited college or university is based in general on the high school and university academic preparation plus the following:
- Evidence of ability and preparation to successfully pursue courses in academic fields that constitute a part of the desired curriculum.
- Evidence that the student is in good standing at the previous school or schools.
Class Profile
While the academic requirements listed reflect minimum guidelines, the profile of students admitted to the SMTD for the Fall 2007 term reflects the selectivity of programs at the University of Michigan. Certainly, academics are only a part of the qualifications for admission, and the School of Music, Theatre & Dance does have some flexibility to consider those students whose artistic merit exceeds their academic achievements.
