AUDITIONS

All Rackham applicants must auditions, interview, and/or present a portfolio.  Those auditioning must audition in person on the Ann Arbor campus for a committee of faculty.  Some programs require a pre-screening recording so please refer to the specific departmental information for these requirements.

Interviews with a select number of applicants in Composition, Composition/Theory and Theatre, are scheduled following review of application dossiers.

All doctoral performance applicants (except in Theatre) will also be required to take a music theory placement examination on their audition day. The forty-five minute examination is intended to assess levels of skills in tonal analysis and harmonic dictation. Performance on this placement test will not affect the admission decision, but may be considered when awarding fellowship funds and/or graduate student assistantships.

Rackham applicants living outside North America may audition by DVD or videotape formatted to the U.S. VHS standards. Send the unedited recording containing the prescribed repertoire to Associate Dean Whiting. Do not send sole or original recordings, because their return cannot be guaranteed.

A confirmation of your audition/interview date will be sent by email after receipt and processing of your application, transcripts, personal statement, and any other materials required by your program.  Approximately two weeks before your confirmed audition date you will be notified of the specific time and room location for your audition and/or interview.   Maps, and travel and lodging information are available here.

Please note that the last date to audition in Ann Arbor for fellowship and assistantship consideration is February 20, 2009.

Please see the respective departmental websites for audition requirements specific to your intended program of study.
