At least one recommendation must be from your major professor, advisor, or department chair. Music Education applicants should submit a recommendation from a supervisor or principal who has observed your teaching.

Persons applying for Not Candidate for Degree (NCFD) admission must also submit three recommendations.

Resume

All applicants must submit a professional resume with the application for admission.  You may upload it with the online application.

Comprehensive Repertoire List

Applicants to all performance programs are required to submit a comprehensive list of repertoire studied on their principal instrument or voice.  Solo and chamber music should be included.   Again, upload it with the application.

Academic Statement of Purpose

Please write and attach (upload) an Academic Statement of Purpose.  This essay should be a concise, well-written statement about your academic and research background, your career goals, and how this graduate program will help you meet your career and educational objectives.

Personal Statement

Please write and attach (upload) a personal statement indicating how your background and life experiences, including cultural, geographical, financial, educational or other opportunities or challenges, motivated your decision to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Michigan.

For example, if you grew up in a community where educational, cultural, or other opportunities were either especially plentiful or especially lacking, you might discuss the impact this had on your development and interests. This should be a discussion of the journey that has led to your decision to seek a graduate degree.

Please do not repeat your Academic Statement of Purpose.

If you are seeking Not Candidate for Degree (NCFD) status, please explain your specific objectives in wishing to enroll.

Please be certain that you have requested the necessary transcripts and recommendations. Consideration of your application may be jeopardized if materials are missing. Because of the volume of such materials, we are unable to notify you if a particular item is not received.
