An audition, interview, or portfolio review is required for every Master of Music or Specialist in Music program. Requirements for your specific degree program and instrument are found in the links below. An email confirmation of your audition/interview date will be sent after receipt and processing of all your application materials. Admission decisions will be made approximately four to six weeks after the audition/interview, when your complete file has been reviewed by the School.
Pre-screening recordings are required for the following programs: Master of Music in Piano Performance, Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy; Master of Music in Voice Performance, Specialist in Music in Voice Performance; Master of Music in String Performance, Specialist in Music in String Performance. Portfolios are required for the following programs: Master of Music in Composition, Master of Arts in Composition,
Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition, PhD in Composition and Music Theory, and Graduate Study in Media Arts.
All portfolios and pre-screening recordings must be submitted by December 1 and will not be forwarded to the faculty for review until the application and all transcripts and test scores (if applicable) have been received. Submit all materials to the Admissions Office . A select number of applicants will be scheduled for an audition/interview following the portfolio/pre-screening review.

Live auditions/interviews are highly preferred, especially for merit-based award consideration. We understand, though, that this is not always possible. Applicants to instrumental or voice performance programs, living 300 miles or more from Ann Arbor, may also audition at a regional site or by DVD/CD.
To receive consideration for merit-based scholarships, recorded audition materials must be submitted by January 15th. Otherwise, recorded audition materials must be received by March 1st. Be aware that applicants who audition in Ann Arbor are given priority for financial awards. School of Music, Theatre & Dance merit-based scholarship decision letters are mailed near the beginning of April.
The audition repertoire requirements are the same regardless of where you take the audition. If you must submit a recorded audition, mark the DVD or CD and its protective cover with your name, UMID# (if known), degree level, program, instrument, and recorded selections. Please note that audition recordings will not be circulated to the faculty for review until all application materials have been received and processed. Admission granted on the basis of a DVD/CD is considered probationary and subject to an in-person audition during your first term of residence.
Please see the respective departments for specific graduate audition date and repertoire information:
Maps, travel, and lodging information are available on this site, and will also be emailed to you in advance of your audition. Approximately two weeks before your confirmed audition/interview date, you will be notified of your specific audition or interview time and room location.
