Necessary Information & Documentation
Transcripts
Applicants for graduate admission must submit an official transcript from each college or university attended. Applicants must have achieved either a four-year undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (where A=4.0), or a grade point average of at least 3.2 for the final two years of undergraduate study. In addition, applicants for specialist programs must have achieved an average of at least 3.0 in their master’s studies.
If you expect to receive a degree between the time of your application and the time of your enrollment in the University of Michigan, you will be asked to submit an additional transcript after your degree is posted.
Recommendations
Three written recommendations must be submitted by persons who are familiar with your work and who can provide information concerning your qualifications for graduate study. At least one recommendation must be from your major professor, adviser, or department chair. Music Education applicants should submit a recommendation from a supervisor or principal who has observed your teaching.
The recommender may use the forms provided with the School of Music, Theatre & Dance application or may submit a letter. Persons applying for Not Candidate for Degree (NCFD) admission need not submit recommendations.
Personal Statement (updated August 1, 2007)
Discuss how a particular performance has influenced your thinking about the relevance of music to contemporary life and culture. This may be a performance you attended or one in which you participated.
If you are seeking Not Candidate for Degree (NCFD) status, in a separate statement, give your specific objectives in wishing to enroll.
Resume
All applicants should submit a professional resume.
Repertoire List
Applicants to all performance programs are required to submit a comprehensive list of repertoire studied on their principal instrument or voice. This list is different from your list of proposed audition repertoire.
Graduate Record Examination
GRE scores are not required for any Master of Music or Specialist in Music programs, except the Specialist in Music degree in Ethnomusicology.
Social Security Number
Disclosure of the applicant’s U.S. Social Security Number is mandatory. It is used for identification purposes in University records in accordance with an administrative regulation issued on November 15, 1966.
UM ID Number
When corresponding with our offices, please include your eight digit UM ID number. If you received an information packet by mail,
this number can be found on the cover letter.
