On-Campus Housing Options
All graduate students are eligible to live in Graduate and Family Housing. The University operates 1089 townhouses and apartments on North Campus, a great location for SMTD students. Both single students and families are encouraged to apply.
While all occupants of a family housing unit must be related (married, same-sex domestic partner and/or living with children), single graduate students are eligible for 2-bedroom units with a roommate of the same gender.
Some of the features of Family and Single Grad Housing:
- Efficiency apartments to three-bedroom townhouses available
- All residents affiliated with U-M, 94% at a graduate or professional level
- Nearly all of the United States and over 70 countries represented
- Free and frequent bus service to all parts of the UM Ann Arbor campus
- Reasonable rates; no application fee or security deposit is required
- Utilities and high speed DSL connection included in rent
- Near North Campus Recreation Building
- On-site, nationally accredited Child Development Center
- On-site English Language Programs
- Adjacent parking
Off-Campus Housing Options
As an alternative, many graduate students elect to live off-campus, in shared housing -- fraternities, sororities, and student owned and operated co-ops -- as well as in standard apartments, houses, and rooms.
The City of Ann Arbor has myriad neighborhoods to choose from. The University’s Off-Campus Housing Program maintains on-line resources such as maps of neighborhoods, along with pictures and brief descriptions, around North, Central, Medical and South Campuses. In addition, there is an option to search for available housing within a specified neighborhood.
Generally, rent is higher in neighborhoods closer to campus. For students who live further away, the University offers limited parking in commuter lots around Ann Arbor and free UM bus service from these lots to the Campuses. In addition, the Ann Arbor Transit Authority (AATA) MRide Program allows UM students, faculty and staff to ride most AATA buses for free.

When You Should Begin Looking
Housing applications are sent to students who have been admitted to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and have officially confirmed their intent to enroll by submitting an Enrollment Deposit. It is important that students provide their School or College with accurate information regarding marital or family status (as indicated on the application for admission) so that the correct University Housing application can be sent. If you qualify for Graduate and Family Housing but do not receive an application, please contact the Housing Information Office with your name, address, and UM ID number and an application will be sent to you.
Pleae allow two to four weeks after you confirm your intent to enroll to receive a housing application.
The SMTD recommends that you begin your housing search as early as possible since availability will decrease as the summer progresses.
