Policies
- All sales of School of Music, Theatre & Dance computing equipment to faculty and staff is at the discretion of the Director of Information Technology (IT). Computers assigned to retiring faculty may be purchased under the same guideline.
- All computer hardware and software purchases for UM computing equipment must be approved by the Director of IT.
- Equipment purchased through faculty grants is the property of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance and must be returned to IT following termination of employment.
- Equipment assigned to faculty or staff is to be returned to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance upon retirement. If circumstances for faculty warrant keeping equipment, they will need to be approved by the Directory of IT. However, no technical support or upgrades will be provided. (Note: Any computer equipment given as gifts are taxable items and will be reported to the IRS by the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.)
- Funding for an ITD email account will be provided to retired or emeritus faculty beyond the retirement date. However, no technical support beyond initial setup will be provided.
- Personally owned software may be installed or run on UM computing equipment if approved by the Director of IT.
- Personally owned computing equipment or software cannot be supported either on UM property or at a personal residence.
- Normally, all active faculty and staff are provided one computer only. This applies to either a desktop or a portable model. An exception to this policy includes computers attained through grants.
- Technical support provided for UM owned computers at a personal residence is limited to phone support. The faculty or staff member is expected to transport the UM owned computer to IT if additional support or service is needed.
- Laptop computers may be obtained for extended leaves of absence with the approval of the Director of IT.
- With the exception of laptop computers, equipment assigned to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance or to the home, must remain in their assigned places.
- The School of Music, Theatre & Dance guidelines for personal use (on or off UM premises) of 'usual' computer resources such as desktop computers, word processing, database, and spreadsheet software, printers, email, etc, are completely in line with the SPG. So as to avoid potential conflict of interest and inappropriate use issues, UM resources cannot be used for personal financial profit or for unethical or illegal activities.
