Mr. Newcomb manages the school's newly established Business Information and Network Security initiatives. His work blends Business Intelligence methods research, data mining of administrative data architectures, and the design of financial projection and internal workflow modeling systems.
Newcomb is also the school's IT Security Liaison/Coordinator for an environment that serves approximately 1100 students and 250 faculty and staff located in the Moore, Stearns, Walgreen, Hill, Power Center, Rackham, League, Burton Tower, Dance and Revelli buildings on the U-M Central and North campuses in Ann Arbor.
Newcomb is active as a musician, composer, performer (guitar, sitar, powerbook, electronics and voice), theorist and software engineer. He has toured India (2005) as a guest of the US Embassy. He has published his compositional theories and described his unique music software in the Cambridge University Press (UK) journal, 'Organised Sound' (1998). He has produced six self-published albums of original music (1986, 1991, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2008). He has designed and implemented complex computer systems for the New York Stock Exchange, Chemical Bank, and Manufacturers Hanover Trust/Prodigy in New York City (1983-1989). His computer music has been featured in electronic music festivals and conferences worldwide (1993-1999). He has been commissioned to compose music for dance, yoga and carillon.
From 1995-1998, Mr. Newcomb was Computer Systems Consultant for the school. From 1998-2007, he held the position of Director of Information Technology.
