Professor Marshall taught instrumental and general music for 11 years in public schools in upstate New York. Previous university positions include Temple University and Georgia State University. In addition, he has taught music classes for children from birth to preschool age in Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Michigan. Research interests include music acquisition, general and instrumental music methodology, multi-cultural music, urban education, reflective teaching practice, and action research.

Professor Marshall serves frequently as a clinician, consultant, adjudicator, and conductor, and teaches workshops for the Gordon Institute of Music Learning. His musical and educational activities on four continents have prompted a lifelong interest in studying and sharing diverse musical styles and means of transmission throughout the world.
