David Gilliland joined the University of Michigan Wind Department as a staff pianist in 2006. He also concurrently serves as the Director of Accompanying at Albion College, and has been the Collaborative Piano Coordinator for the Interlochen Arts Summer Camp since 2004.
Originally from Indiana, Gilliland began piano lessons at age 5. A semester study abroad in Vienna sparked his interest in collaborative piano, and he subsequently pursued multiple graduate degrees in this field. During that time, he participated in several summer festivals ranging from the Banff Centre of the Arts to the Music Academy of the West. His principal teachers include Jean Barr, Margo Garrett, Lorna Griffitt-Bedelian, and Karl Paulnack. Since moving to Ann Arbor, Gilliland has also been affiliated with the Sphinx Competition, Anatomy of Sound and Michigan Opera Theater.
An avid modern music enthusiast, Gilliland has coached with several leading American composers including William Bolcom, Michael Daugherty, and Libby Larsen. He will be recording the wind compositions of Henri Dutilleux in 2009 with members of the University of Michigan Music Faculty to be released on M-Block records.
