Mr. Laman is a composer and performer whose recent work has focused on improvisational performance using electronics, soundscape recording, and site-specific installations. He has made field recordings in both Michigan and Japan and is currently working on Sounds of the Arb, a soundscape recording and composition project in the U-M Nichols Arboretum funded by a Ford Arts and Culture Grant as part of the Arts in the Arb series. Mr. Laman creates custom-built performance interfaces using materials ranging from pinwheels to mixing bowls. Recent performances have included live electronic music for modern dance and video art as well as improvisational performances in collaboration with instrumentalists. His collaborators have included Chris Peck (electronics), Stephen Eberle (video), Robert Newcomb (guitar), Michael Gould Squared (percussion and shakuhachi), and the Astrand/Gould/Laman/Peck/Sarath collective (vibraphone, percussion, electronics, and flugelhorn).

Mr. Laman is currently a Computer Systems Consultant at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance where he is responsible for supporting the Music Technology Labs and instructional technology resources. He has also served as an Adjunct Lecturer in Performing Arts Technology at U-M (Digital Music Ensemble - Fall 2000, Computer Music Programming - Fall 2001).

Mr. Laman's works, integrating acoustic instruments with electronics in live performance, have been performed at the 1997 SEAMUS conference in Kansas City, Missouri, and the 1998 International Computer Music Conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as well as various Ann Arbor venues. His music can be heard on Alternating Currents - Electronic Music from the University of Michigan (Centaur Records 2000).
