Alan Gosman joined the School of Music, Theatre & Dance faculty in 2006. His research focuses on the Beethoven sketchbooks, contrapuntal techniques, canons, history of theory, tonal form, and links between performance and analysis. He holds degrees from Harvard University, the University of Michigan, and Wesleyan University. Currently he is writing a book on Beethoven's Landsberg 6 ("Eroica") Sketchbook with Lewis Lockwood.  Mr. Gosman's articles have appeared in Music Theory Spectrum and the Journal of Music Theory, and he has an article forthcoming in Theory and Practice.  In addition, he has contributed chapters to the forthcoming books Keys to the Drama: Nine Perspectives on Sonata Forms, and Genetic Criticism and the Creative Process: Essays from Music, Literature, and Theater.

Mr. Gosman has presented at national meetings of the Society for Music Theory, the Interdisciplinary Nineteenth-Century Studies International Conference, the international conference "Genetic Criticism in an Interdisciplinary Context," and numerous regional conferences.  Other recent talks include a lecture at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland that was arranged by the U.S. State Department through the U.S. Consulate Office in Poland, and a presentation given as part of the "Conversations on Europe Lecture Series" presented by the Center for European Studies and European Union Center at the University of Michigan.  In 2010 he will give a lecture at Harvard University as part of a symposium called "Performing Beethoven." Prior to his position at the University of Michigan he taught at Michgian State University and Harvard University. Mr. Gosman is a pianist and conductor.
