Jane Fulcher received her MA and Ph.D. from Columbia University. She teaches courses and seminars that focus on 19th and particularly 20th-century music within its larger cultural, social, political, and intellectual contexts. A specialist in French music, she is especially interested in the relation between music and cultural theory from a sociological, anthropoligical, and historical, as well as from a literary perspective.
The founder and editor-in-chief of the monograph series at Oxford UniversityPress, The New Cultural History of Music, she is the author several books, including The Nation's Image: French Grand Opera as Politics and Politicized Art (Cambridge University Press, 1987; French translation and adaptation as Le Grand opéra français: un art politique, Paris: Belin, 1988), French Cultural Politics and Music from the Dreyfus Affair to the First World War (Oxford University Press, 1999) and The Composer as Intellectual: Music and Ideology in France 1914-1940 (Oxford University Press, 2005). She is also the editor of, and contributor to, Debussy and his World (Princeton University Press, 2001), and co-editor and contributor to Opera and Society in Italy and France from Monteverdi to Bourdieu (Cambridge University Press, 2007). She is currently working on a fourth monograph, Renegotiating French Identity: Musical Culture and Creativity in France during the German Occupation, and is in the process of editing The Oxford Handbook to The New Cultural History of Music, to which she will also contribute.
Jane Fulcher has also published articles in musiclogical as well as historical, sociological and literary journals including The Journal of The American Musicological Society, 19th-Century Music, Acta Musicologica, The Cambridge Opera Journal, The Musical Quarterly, Pierre Bourdieu's Actes de la recherche en sciences sociales, Le Mouvement social, Annales: Histoire, sciences sociales, Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, and The Stanford French Review.
She has been awarded fellowship for Individual research from The American Council of Learned Societies, The National Endowment for the Humanities (twice), the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Advanced Study, Berlin), the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (Paris), the National Humanities Center, and was the Edward T. Cone Member in Music Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey in 2003-04.
Jane Fulcher has given invited lectures and participated in confrences through- out the United States and Europe, and had three times been invited to be visiting professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, in Paris.
