Prior to his appointment at the University of Michigan, Bloom was Professor of Music at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan where he taught music theory, music history, and music technology. He also served as Fine Arts Department Chair at that institution. He has recently completed an appointment as Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
In addition to his skills as an administrator and teacher, Bloom is an accomplished and critically acclaimed conductor. He has a diverse background in conducting and finds himself frequently in front of an orchestra or chorus, or in the opera or musical theater genres. Past appointments as a conductor have included the Aspen Music Festival, the National Music Camp at Interlochen Michigan, the University of Michigan Men's Glee Club, Interim Director of Choral Activities at Eastern Michigan University, and the Ann Arbor Cantata Singers.
Bloom’s more than 30 years of experience includes a broad base of choral proficiency that spans from the professional to the amateur. He has prepared choirs for Robert Shaw, Sergiu Commissiona, John Nelson, Robert Fountain and other national artists. Presently, he is Music Director of the Flint Festival Chorus.
Bloom received a master’s degree from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in conducting from the University of Iowa.
