In addition to his duties at the University of Michigan, Dr. Bersaglia is the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Sacred Winds Ensemble.  Founded in 1997, the ensemble's performance body consists of professional musicians from across the country.  Since 2000, the ensemble has commissioned and premiered 13 works for wind, string, and choral ensembles.

Professor Bersaglia earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from The University of Texas at Austin, studying with Jerry Junkin.  During his residency, he served as conductor of the Concert Band and Graduate Conducting Assistant for the entire band program.  While in Austin, he was also the orchestra conductor at Hyde Park Baptist Church.

Prior to his appointment at UT, Dr. Bersaglia was Director of Bands at South Laurel High School in London, KY.  Under his leadership, all ensembles received top honors at both regional and state festivals. He initiated the school's first commissioning project and chamber players program.  Additionally, the symphonic band presented ensemble master classes and conducting symposia at Cumberland College and the University of Kentucky.

Recent projects include his doctoral treatise, “Steven Stucky’s Funeral Music for Queen Mary, after Purcell,” two publications in GIA’s “Teaching Music Through Performance in Band,” and most recently, a commission from David Maslanka to be premiered in 2007 by the Sacred Winds Ensemble.

Dr. Bersaglia holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Morehead State University where he won the A. Frank and Bethel C. Gallaher Memorial Performance Competition and was awarded “Outstanding Undergraduate in Music” as well as the Helen Fulbright Citation in Music Education.  He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Delta Pi, Gamma Beta Phi, and Tau Beta Sigma (honorary) and holds memberships in several professional organizations including the College Band Directors National Association and the Conductors Guild.  He serves as the faculty advisor for the Epsilon chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
