Visiting Campus
Prospective students interested in visiting campus should visit the Admission Office's information on visiting, as well as contact Prof. Joseph Gramley or Prof. Jonathan Ovalle. A visit outside of the audition is a good way to get a sense of everyday life at Michigan and get to know current students and faculty. If you wish to view a percussion class or rehearsal, Tuesdays and Thursdays are good days. Orchestral Repertoire Class, Percussion Ensemble, Percussion Pedagogy, Percussion Literature, and Studio Class meet on Tuesday and Thursdays. Large ensembles (orchestras/bands) rehearse Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. World Percussion Ensemble also rehearses Wednesday and Friday late afternoons.

During Your Audition Day - some rules to follow
- Room 1215, on the lower level, will be available for you to warm up in, beginning a half hour prior to your scheduled audition time.
- A student proctor will be at the room to welcome you. We value our instruments highly, so we hope you will not mind showing the proctor the mallets and timpani sticks you propose to use. We have experienced damaged instruments on audition days, so we hope you understand the intent of these guidelines.
- PLEASE DO NOT USE HARD PLASTIC OR ACRYLIC MALLETS ON THE XYLOPHONE -”Becker Blues” or the equivalent are fine.
- Please use caution when playing marimba at loud dynamics so as to avoid cracking bars, especially in the lower octaves. If the core is hard and your tone sounds brittle, the mallet is too hard.
- PLEASE DO NOT USE THE BACK/BUTT END OF TIMPANI MALLETS ON TIMPANI HEADS (Carter, etc.)
If you have any questions or are not sure about your mallets, please ask the student proctor before you begin your warm up.
During your audition day, if you have any questions about anything, feel free to come into the percussion cage (located next to the rehearsal hall) and introduce yourself. We’ll be happy to talk with you about the program and answer any questions you may have.
WE HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR AUDITION EXPERIENCE AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN!!
