Welcome
Welcome to ¡El Bajón en México! and thank you for visiting this mixed-media presentation of solo and chamber music for bassoon by Mexican composers. As the site has just opened, many of the items you’ll eventually find here have not yet been posted, but some are available now via the links above. Simply click on the links in the banner to navigate around the site.
Chapters
As the site develops, you will be able to choose from the following broad chapters:
- A general history of the bassoon in Mexico, from its introduction by the Spaniards to the present day.
- A table of solo and chamber music featuring the bassoon from composers across Mexico. Most of the works are by composers from the 20th and 21st centuries, but if visitors to the site tell me about earlier works I've not heard of, that information will be found here as well.
- Interviews with the composers whose music you find in the tables.
- Interviews with important bassoonists either from Mexico or currently living and working there.
- Streaming and downloadable audio of the music featured in this site.
- Notices of live concerts of this music.

Project Author
If you are wondering who the "I" or the "me" is on all of these pages, it's Dr. Jeffrey Lyman, Associate Professor of Bassoon here at the University of Michigan. I've been collecting this music for about twelve years now, some of it while I lived and worked in Arizona, and much more of it now that I have joined the faculty here in Ann Arbor. After a visit to Oaxaca last summer, I realized that I had ammassed enough of a collection that it was time to coordinate it all into a formal project, and my conversations with bassoonists around the world told me that very little of this music was known, even in Mexico. So again, thanks for visiting, and I'd love to hear your thoughts about the music and the site.
