Bachelor of Music in Performance: String Major with Teacher Certification (Curriculum B)

The Bachelor of Music in Performance: String Major with Teacher Certification (Curriculum B) is designed for students who wish to teach in elementary or secondary schools. The Bachelor's degree and Teacher's Certificate are awarded at the completion of all required coursework. Students interested in applying for graduate standing upon completion of Bachelor of Music requirements are encouraged to do so.

Pre-College Music Preparation

Several years of study on your principal instrument are required; experience in orchestral and chamber music is desirable; piano study is recommended.

Curriculum

     
  • A minimum of forty hours of performance
  • Six courses in secondary instruments
  • Two terms of chamber music
  • One year of piano or placement exam equivalent
  • Presentation of a recital
  • Participation each term in a University Orchestra
  • One year of conducting
  • A minimum of twenty-four hours of musicology and music theory, including the study of European and American music history, the sounds and concepts of many world music traditions and the study of the structure of primarily tonal music, through ear training and sight singing, written work in construction and composition and music analysis
  • One course in advanced music theory
  • One additional elective in musicology or music theory
  • A minimum of six hours of Music electives to be chosen on consultation with departmental advisor
  • A minimum of fifteen to nineteen Music Education credit hours and nine School of Education credit hours
  • Admission to the Teacher Education Program
  • Completion of all applications, courses, student teaching, and audits necessary for the K-12 Michigan Teacher’s Certificate
  • A minimum of thirty-two credit hours of additional coursework in various departments covering the areas of humanities, natural and social science, one introductory psychology course, and the University's two semester English writing requirement
  • Electives to complete a total of 133 credit hours
