School of Music, Theatre & Dance Students

Ma'ayan Beider-Jacobssohn (DMA in Performance Double Bass) toured with Barenboim Young Artists, and will be a concerto soloist (Rota Divertimente Concertante) in Israel.

Christine Carddock (BM in Double Bass Performance) was an Eastern Music Festival audition winner.

Sarah Charness (BM in Violin Performance) will be an intern at ICM Artists Management in NYC for part of the summer and then will be returning to the Mancini Institute in California later in July.

Elizabeth Glennon (DMA in Cello Performance) has earned an invitation to the Banff School of Fine Arts where she will study with Aldo Parisot.  

Maggie Hasspacher (BM in Double Bass Performance) was a Brevard Festival audition winner, and will be a Junior Faculty for Golden Gate Bass Camp, San Francisco this summer.

Ahyoung Jeon (MM in Harp Performance) was a finalist in the School wide concerto competition, held January 2006.

Anna Jensen (DMA in Performance Double Bass) participated in Shenandoah Bach Festival in Harrisonburg, VA in the festival orchestra bass section. She was a guest artist for the "Trout" quintet at Kairos Festival and Lyceum. At the Lach. Chelan Bach Festival she was the soloist with the Stamitz flute concerto in G Major transcribed for double bass. She was the double bass faculty member at the Laughing Horse Orchestra Festival, held at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA, and a guest artist at Icicle Creek Chamber Music Festival.

Andrew Kratzat (BM in Double Bass Performance) was featured at the International Society of Bassists opening concert as 2003 Jazz winner. He toured South Korea and performed in New York City.

Mark Latham (DMA in conducting and violin principal) has been invited to be assistant conductor to Helmut Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival this summer.

Fabian Lopez (DMA in Violin Performance) performed several recitals this spring, including Detroit and Ann Arbor, in collaboration with wife Sinthia Perez (MM in Harp Performance) and Dmitri Vorobiev (DMA in Collaborative Piano). Mr. Lopez was a finalist in the Concerto competition (Brahms Concerto) and performed in a chamber concert with Ida Kavafian.

Peter Opie (DMA in Cello Performance) was chosen to perform with Detroit Symphony Orchestra on a substitute basis. He was the state winner of the MTNA Competition, will be principal cellist this summer at the Texas Music Festival in Houston, and be on the faculty of a chamber music camp in Iowa.  All three are greatly enjoying their affiliation with the DSO.

Brad Phillips has just completed an 18 City German Tour with Irish group Millish, winner of the International Acoustic Music Award.

Yuki Numata (MM in VIolin Performance) played a recital in Ann Arbor which included the world premieres of two new works written for her. She will become a member of the Fromm Chamber Players at Tanglewood this summer.

Karl Pestka (BM in Compostion and PAT, and violin principal) has had another highly prolific year, perfroming his own compositions for electric violin, and with his funk/prog/metal band, The Sexual Panatalones. with engagements in Ann Arbor, Lansing and Detroit, as well as in the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. His performance at the annual Collage concert, presented by the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, was one of three winners for best performance.

Evan Premo (BM in Double Bass Performance) long list of recent achievements include performances at the Kennedy Center, the Linkola Concerto – Grand Finn Fest, White Water and Duo Borealis performances, ISB presentation and Solo competition finalist, winning the U of M Concerto Competition, a Linkola Concerto performance with UPR, and a Recent CD with Duo Borealis.

Yona Stamatis (PhD pre-candidate in Ethnomusicology and violin student) has been awarded a full fellowship to participate this summer in the National Orchestra Institute in MD.

Isaac Trapkus (BM in Double Bass Performance) is a recipient of the Earl V. Moore Award for 2006. He is a U of M Concerto Competition Winner, performed the Tubin Concerto, was a recent audition winner at Schleswich Holstein Festival, and was the principal of the Double Bass sections at the New York Strings Seminar.

Colin Tucker (BM in Cello Performance) has recently been awarded one of the coveted BMI Young Composers Awards.

Katharina Uhde (DMA in VIolin Performance) was featured as soloist with the Baden-Baden Sinfonie-Orchester.

Niel van Zyl (BM in Cello Performance) has received an invitation to perform for the summer of 2006 with the Durban Symphony Orchestra in his native South Africa.

Jennifer Walvoord (DMA in Violin Performance) has been appointed concertmaster of the West Shore Symphony and also will be teaching part time at Hope College in the Spring. She was part of a student-run committee that put together the 125th Student Recital Series celebrating the history of the school and performed on two of these concert. She has also set up a website commemrating the History of the Violin Department. She was featured as soloist with the Holland Symphony Orchestra, performing the Tchaikovsky concerto.

Jonathan Yuen (BM in violin performance) will be a member of the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, CO this summer.

 

Michigan Youth Programs

 

High School harp students Liann Cline (Portage High School, Portage, MI), Danielle Popielarz (Saginaw West High School, Saginaw, MI) and Emily Granger (Overland Park High School, Kansas City, KS) will be attending the 2006 Interlochen Arts Camp session.

The Michigan Youth Programs High School Harp Ensemble, Anne Keller (Pioneer High School, Ann Arbor), Liann Cline (Portage High School, Portage), Lori Peterson (Ionia High School, Ionia) and Megan Walters (Brighton High School, Brighton) performed March 24 in Portage and March 27 in Ann Arbor.

Anne Keller and Danielle Popielarz performed with the Michigan Youth Orchestra for the 2005-2006 year. Anne Keller will be attending the Young Harpists Seminar in Rabun Gap, Georgia in July of 2006.
