School of Music, Theatre & Dance Graduate: Collaborative Piano, Requirements and Dates
Master of Music in Collaborative Piano
The first portion of your audition will be played for a committee of the piano faculty. You should prepare and memorize a major composition (e.g., a sonata) for piano solo, demonstrating technical and musical command of the keyboard.
For the second portion of your audition you will be requested to perform the following for the collaborative staff:

Choose one of the following:
Brahms: Clarinet Sonata in f minor, last movement
Franck: Violin Sonata in A, second movement
Schumann: Fantasy Pieces

All of the following, in listed key:
Schumann: Du Ring an meinem Finger (E-flat Major)
Berg: Im Zimmer (B-flat Major)
Debussy: Green (A-flat minor)
Mozart: An Chloe (E-flat Major)
Schubert: Die Taubenpost (G Major)
Sight-reading and foreign language familiarity may also be tested at your audition.
It is vital that we have ALL your information by the December 1 deadline. This includes:
a) your choices of instrumental pieces and any soloists you will require. This must be clearly and fully indicated on
your Request for Audition/Interview form
b) a list of your complete piano repertoire, including all ensemble repertoire
c) transcripts from your previous schools
d) TOEFL score results, where applicable. You may not take the TOEFL after the audition.
If any of these materials are missing, you will not be given an audition date.
Audiotapes will not be considered. DVDs or videotapes will be considered only in unusual circumstances. If you wish to submit a DVD or videotape, write or e-mail Martin Katz, Professor of Collaborative Piano (partner@umich.edu) for permission before preparing your recording.
Specialist in Music in Instrumental Collaboration and Piano Chamber Music
Prepare approximately thirty minutes of music, including one movement of a chamber work by Beethoven, one movement of a chamber work of the Romantic period, and one movement of a work that did not originally call for piano accompaniment. Sight-reading will be required. You must specify any soloists you require.
It is vital that we have ALL your information by the December 1 deadline. This includes:
a) your audition program (and any soloists you will require) must be submitted by December 1 and must be approved
by Professor Martin Katz in advance of your audition date. Repertoire should be clearly and fully indicated on your Request for Audition/Interview form.
b) a list of your complete piano repertoire, including all ensemble repertoire
c) transcripts from your previous schools
d) TOEFL score results, where applicable. You may not take the TOEFL after the audition.

Specialist in Music in Vocal Collaboration and Coaching
Prepare approximately thirty minutes of music, including vocal accompaniments representing at least three periods and three languages. Include a work not originally composed for piano accompaniment. Sight-reading and transposition will be required. You must specify soloists you require and keys of all songs.
It is vital that we have ALL your information by the December 1 deadline. This includes:
a) your audition program (and any soloists you will require) must be submitted by December 1 and must be approved
by Professor Martin Katz in advance of your audition date. Repertoire should be clearly and fully indicated on your Request for Audition/Interview form.
b) a list of your complete piano repertoire, including all ensemble repertoire
c) transcripts from your previous schools
