Graduate Study in Media Arts (M.A)
The M.A. in Media Arts strives to develop artists and technologists committed to expanding the boundaries of artistic expression through multimedia technologies. The M.A. degree is a multi-disciplinary program integrating engineering, music, and art. It develops the technical skills necessary to create artistic works incorporating sound and visual arts.
How To Apply For Admission
The deadline for applications for admission is December 1. Each applicant is asked to submit the following materials in addition to the official application form of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
- Each applicant must submit his or her scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Be certain to take the test early enough that the scores will reach the University by the deadline for applying for admission or, if applicable, for financial aid. Although no minimum cut-off scores have been established, no admission decision will be made until these scores have been received.
- Official transcripts from each college or university attended must be submitted. An earned degree transcript demonstrating a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.6 from an accredited baccalaureate institution is required.
- A written statement of purpose, of what the student intends to accomplish through graduate study in the media arts.
- Recommendations from at least three persons able to evaluate your potential for graduate study in media arts.
- All international applicants whose native language is not English must submit a score from an English proficiency examination. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or the Michigan English Language Battery (MELAB) score must be submitted with their application and admission materials. The School of Music, Theatre & Dance requires a minimum qualifying score of 7 on the IELTS exam; a minimum qualifying score of 250 on the TOEFL computer exam or a score of at least 600 on the TOEFL paper exam; a minimum qualifying score of 83 is required on the MELAB exam.
- A portfolio of representative creative work. The portfolio, which should consist of the student's best work in any medium, is pivotal in establishing artistic and academic potential. Example portfolio pieces may include original electro-acoustic compositions, slides of paintings, interactive art, video, a WWW site, or software.

Upon evaluation of admissions materials, applicants may be invited to an audition/interview with members of the program faculty. Music and engineering proficiency examinations will be administered at that time.
Prerequisities For Admission
Incoming students should have an earned B.Mus, B.A., B.F.A. or B.S. degree and experience with electroacoustic music or multimedia composition, technology-enhanced performance, production and computer programming.
Degree Requirements
The M.A. degree program in Media Arts requires 36 credits: a curriculum of four required courses (12 credits), a thesis (9 credits), and coursework elected in consultation with an advisor (15 credits). Two of the four required courses, Media Arts: Immersion and Enculturation, and Engineering Applications of Media Technology, serve to build a common understanding and vocabulary among artists and technologists. Two additional required courses, Interdisciplinary Collaboration I & II, emulate the collaborative environment emblematic of the creation of multimedia technologies and art genres.
Required Courses:
- PAT510: Media Arts: Immersion and Enculturation (3 credits)
Course Description: The course details the theory and practice of music technology, interactive art forms that use technology, models of human computer interaction, and digital video and animation. Students will perform analyses of contemporary works in the media arts from aesthetic, production, technological, and artistic points of view. Students will examine the roles in the collaborative process.
- PAT511: Engineering Applications of Media Technology (3 credits)
Course Description: Algorithm design and analysis with applications in the sonic and visual arts; fundamental knowledge representation, formal reasoning, and search algorithms. An emphasis on fundamental computational problems in the media arts and a discussion of the introductory issues in encoding and processing style.
- PAT512: Interdisciplinary Collaboration I (3 credits)
Course Description: Students form teams to realize computer-based multimedia works that integrate technology, music, sound, art and moving image. Students analyze the work as an individual as well as a member of a group. The analysis details aspects of the design, role development, collaboration, aesthetic goal, artistic statement, production values, and the role of technology in the creative process.
- PAT513: Interdisciplinary Collaboration II (3 credits)
Course Description: A continuation of Interdisciplinary Collaboration I with an emphasis on large-scale multimedia interactive installations.
- PAT590: Thesis
Course Description: Supervised work on a research topic in the Media Arts approved by the student's thesis committee
