Rackham Graduate Requirements and Dates
Two programs leading to the degree Doctor of Musical Arts are available in organ:
- Program I: Organ Performance
- Program II: Liturgical, Church, and Synagogue Music
Required Materials
To apply for admission, all applicants to the D.M.A. must submit an official application, transcripts, recommendations, and other materials as instructed below. Indicate your instrument on the application form. The deadline for applications is December 1 for the fall term and September 15 for the winter term. Indicate on your application form whether you wish to apply for Program I or Program II.
Submit your application and indicate the works you intend to perform for your audition. You are also required to submit a comprehensive list of the repertoire you have studied. Be prepared to perform a varied program of at least thirty to forty-five minutes’ duration selected from the repertoire specified below. No action can be taken on your application until your application file is complete and the audition has been taken.
International applicants whose language is not English must submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score or the Michigan English Language Battery (MELAB) score before the audition may be scheduled.
Admission to the doctoral program does not guarantee that the student will ultimately complete the course requirements, become a candidate, or receive the degree. Admission implies only that the applicant has the requisite background and should be given the opportunity to demonstrate his or her ability.
Prerequisites
All of the requirements for the degrees Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in organ performance from the University of Michigan, or their equivalents, must be fulfilled, including two memorized recitals. If the performance or repertoire of the student does not meet the requirements for the two degrees from the University of Michigan, he or she will be required to make up the deficiencies prior to admission to precandidacy. Deficiencies in the requirements for memorization may be fulfilled through performances in recitals, studio recitals, juries, or other public performances. All courses in music theory required for the degree Bachelor of Music (Organ Performance) from the University of Michigan must be completed.
Audition/Interview
For admission to the D.M.A. program, each applicant must be prepared to play a minimum of twenty minutes of music, including at least one work by J. S. Bach (e.g. a prelude and fugue, trio sonata, large chorale prelude, or equivalent) and at least one work from either the Romantic or Contemporary periods. Memorization is recommended for the Program I: Organ Performance audition.
