Specialist in Music in Music Education

Specialist in Music Education applicants must have at least two years of full-time teaching experience and a master's degree in music education or a related field.

The courses listed below constitute the minimum requirements. Asterisks next to course numbers designate course requirements that may be met through previous master's degree coursework, subject to the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies.

Curriculum

  • 595 Teaching Music in Higher Education (2)
    Includes an examination of theories of music teaching and learning, adult learning styles, developmental stages experienced by undergraduate students, and discussion of issues in the teaching of music in higher education. This course is designed to satisfy the training/orientation requirement for graduate student teaching assistants.

  • 800 Research Design in Music Education (3)
    Study of the music education research literature with an emphasis on framing research problems and evaluating research studies from a wide range of research traditions.

  • 801 The Psychology of Music Teaching and Learning (3)
    Study of the psychological foundations of music teaching and learning, including perception, motivation, creative and critical thinking, and musical development.

  • 802 History and Philosophy of Music Education (3)
    Critical analysis of the history and philosophy of music education in North America.

  • 803 Curriculum Development in Music Education (3)
    Concentrates on the issues involved in developing appropriate music curricula for students in grades K-12.

  • 810 Seminar in Music Education Methods (3)
    Permission of instructor. Advanced methods in choral, general, and instrumental music education. Topics taught on three-year rotation.

Musicology

At least three graduate courses (500-level or above) of at least two hours each. One of the three courses may have been elected as a master's student at the University of Michigan or elsewhere, but at least two courses must be elected while in residence as a Specialist student at the University of Michigan. At least one course must be in Western music and one must be at the 600-level. Individual studies courses will not satisfy the requirement.

Music Theory

Two graduate courses (500-level) of at least two hours. The courses may have been elected as a master's student at the University of Michigan or elsewhere. An individual studies course will not satisfy the requirement.

School of Education

At least one graduate research course of at least three hours in the School of Education, determined by the student's research interest area. An individual studies course will not satisfy this requirement.

Electives

A minimum of six credits. Specialist students in Music Education may elect courses in any department of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance or in any other school or college of the University to satisfy their special interests and career goals. Conducting and/or music performance may be elected if the student passed the specific department's audition during the admission process. Specialist students are also encouraged to broaden their performance experience by participating in ensembles such as the Javanese gamelan.
