Comprehensive Oral Examination or Thesis
All masters degree students are required to complete either a comprehensive oral examination or a thesis.
Comprehensive Oral Examination Option
In the final semester of masters degree study, the student, in consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies, will choose three professors to act as an exam committee. The exam chair and at least one committee member must be music education professors. The third exam committee member may be from music education or another department. In consultation with the faculty members, the student will develop three exam questions:
- philosophy or research
- psychology, curriculum or music teacher methods
- musical score analysis
The questions must be approved by the committee members three weeks in advance of the examination. The exam will last approximately 90 minutes (30 minutes for each of the three questions). Students may not read from notes or note cards during the exam. At the completion of the exam, students will leave the room and a decision regarding passing/failing of exam will be made. The majority of the committee members must agree for a pass. If the student does not pass, the re-examination must be completed within one year. Details regarding what needs to be improved will be provided to the student by the Director of Graduate Studies within 72 hours of the failed exam.
Thesis Option
The student wishing to complete a thesis as a one-to three-credit option will choose a thesis advisor from the music education faculty. The advisor will assist the student in forming the three person thesis committee that will include at least one other music education faculty member. In consultation with the thesis advisor the student will develop a project proposal. All committee members must receive the proposal three weeks in advance of the thesis proposal defense. The thesis proposal defense will last approximately one hour.
Credits for the thesis may be completed at any time during the degree. However, all thesis credits must be completed by the semester of the thesis defense. All committee members must receive the completed thesis document at least three weeks in advance of the final thesis defense. The defense will last approximately one hour. At the completion of the defense, the student will leave the room and a decision regarding passing/failing of exam will be made. The majority of the committee members must agree for a pass. If the student does not pass, the defense must be completed within one year. Details regarding what needs to be improved will be provided to the student by the Director of Graduate Studies within 72 hours of the failed defense.
