Community Engagement

The Department of Music Education collaborates with schools, organizations, and communities for the purpose of advancing the cause of music in school and community. Engaging with the broader community beyond the campus occurs at two levels: collaborations arising out of the undergraduate curriculum, and those organized independently by faculty as part of their service to the state and professional organizations.

The most dominant form of community engagement in the curriculum is the field experience that is an integral part of the several courses in the music teacher education program. Over the years, the faculty has developed a strong network of collaborations with P-12 schools at the local and state levels. Collaborations range from classroom observations of master teachers in the freshman year to short-term field experience as part of methods courses to long-term student teaching where a music teacher mentors a student throughout a semester or part thereof.

The faculty participate in a variety of non-curricular forms of community engagement, including service to P-12 students & teachers, professional development for P-12 teachers, events on campus, and roles in community/professional organizations.
