Professor Croft receives 2016-17 IRWG grant

 02/03/2017

The Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) has named Clare Croft, assistant professor of dance, as a 2016-17 recpient of a seed grant. Croft is among seven U-M faculty members to receive the grant, which is for projects on women, gender and sexuality. The IRWG grants support individual research activities, as well as collaborative projects, such as pilot studies or initial research efforts.

Croft's grant will support archival and oral history work on a  book-length project, "A Different Kind of Lady: Jill Johnston's Political Embodiments in Dance and Feminism." Through her study of Johnston, a dance critic and radical feminist activist, Croft aims to better understand the role of embodiment as a feminist tool. The book provides a close examination of Johnston’s political activism, her influence on contemporary dance, and her memoir writing.
