Bachelor of Fine Arts
This degree is intended for students seeking a career in performance and choreography.
The Dance Department embraces and extends the legacies of 20th-century American modern dance and ballet, ever mindful of the necessity to invigorate contemporary dance forms. Students forge their own creative voice, consolidate a range of technical skills, and enjoy extensive performance opportunities. From dancing in the first year Freshman Touring Company to performing onstage at the Power Center, creating multi-media collaborations in the Duderstadt Video Studio or working in the community, dance students develop discipline, independent thinking, creative problem-solving, leadership and team skills, technological competencies and an appreciation for artistic, intellectual and social diversity. The fundamentals and finer points of dance technique, performance and composition are stressed, and all practical learning is underpinned by compulsory academic courses both within and beyond our discipline.
Dance at Michigan can be also be studied as part of a dual degree program. Many of our dance majors graduate with a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree concurrently with their BFA in Dance.
Pre-College Dance Preparation
Significant experience in dance performance and choreography.
Dance Requirements
Seventy-seven credit hours of dance including the following:
- Twenty hours of modern dance technique
- Twelve hours of ballet
- Eight hours of dance composition
- Eight hours of dance repertory
- Two hours each of Dance Production/Dance and Related Arts
- Two hours each of Anatomy and Kinesiology for Dancers/Body Knowledge
- Six hours of dance history
- Two hours of music for dance
- Three hours of teaching methods
- World dance (These courses are often co-sponsored by the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies, the Center for South Asian Studies, or the Center for World Performance Studies)
- Senior Seminar
- Senior Concert
Music Requirements
- Six hours elected in Musicology, Music Theory, Composition or Performance
Non-School of Music, Theatre & Dance Requirements
Thirty credit hours including:
- the University’s two semester English writing requirement
- One course in Art History
- Nineteen credit hours of non-dance electives.
Electives
- Seven (dance or non-dance courses) to complete a total of 120 hours
