Degree Programs

The Department of Composition offers the following degrees:

Undergraduate Degree Programs

Graduate Degree Programs

Master's Degrees

The difference between the curricula for the MM and the MA programs in composition is simple -- the minor for the MM degree is in a field within music (e.g., performance, musicology, or music theory), while the minor for the MA degree is in a field outside of music. The application process differs for the two degrees, but the admission criteria are identical, and it is possible to change from one to the other after admission.

  • Master of Music (MM) in Composition—Applicants wishing the maximum number of elections in music should seek the MM program.
  • Master of Arts (MA) in Composition—administered jointly with the Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Applicants whose undergraduate work was strong in liberal arts and who wish to continue that emphasis at the graduate level may prefer to apply for the MA.
