Master of Music in Composition

Curriculum

  • 4 credits per semestser of private composition instruction
  • 2 credits per semester of composition seminar
  • 8 credits of music theory, musicology, electronic music, and/or music technology
  • 8 credits of music courses other than composition (performance is recommended)
  • Electives to complete a total of thirty credits
  • Presentation of a short orchestral work or other large ensemble work composed while in residence

Note: The main difference between the curriculua for the MM and the MA programs in composition is that the cognate for the MM degree is in a field within music (e.g., performance, musicology, or music theory), while the cognate for the MA degree is in a field outside of music. While the application process differs for these degrees, the admission criteria are identical, and it is possible to change from one to the other after admission.
