Composition Portfolio Requirements and Dates  -  M.M. Program

Submit up to seven scores of your musical compositions with recordings of each work on indexed compact disc or separate cassette tapes.  (MP3 disks or data CDs will not be reviewed). All musical styles are welcome, though it should be noted that the departmental curriculum is geared toward composing for classical instruments and ensembles. All materials should be sent to Ms. Debbie Siefker, Applications Coordinator, and must be received no later than December 1. Portfolios will not be forwarded to the faculty for review until the application and all transcripts have been received and reviewed by the School's Office of Admissions. Indicate on all materials your name, UM ID, mailing address, email address, and the program for which you are applying. Send copies of your work rather than originals. Portfolios will not be returned unless a self-addressed stamped envelope is included, and we cannot be responsible in the event of loss or damage.

After the faculty review portfolios, a selected number of applicants will be invited for on-campus interviews.  Please indicate your preference for an interview date on the application; this will facilitate scheduling in the event that you are invited to interview.

Although the interview is not a requirement for admission, it does provide an opportunity for you to interact with the composition faculty and is highly recommended. For those applicants invited to campus for an interview, confirmation emails will be sent by the end of December. No audition is required for admission to the graduate programs in Composition.

A note on the M.M. and M.A. Programs:  Students who are interested in qualifying for the Rackham Merit Fellowship should apply for the MA degree.  The difference between the curriculum for the M.M. and the M.A. programs in composition is that the minor area of study for the M.Mus. degree is in a field within music (e.g., performance, musicology, or music theory), while the minor for the M.A. degree is in a field outside of music.  While the application process differs for these degrees, the admission criteria are identical, and it is possible to change from one to the other after admission.
