Performance Opportunities

 

Bands

All students who receive School of Music, Theatre & Dance merit-based scholarships are required to participate each semester in one of the ensembles marked with an asterisk (*) or for some jazz degrees (**); doctoral students are exempt.

 

* Symphony Band/Chamber Winds

2 credits.
  • Open to all, but not recommended for non-music majors because of the extensive rehearsals and performances.
  • Audition required - most selective band. Single screened audition for both this and Concert Band. Audition sign-up sheets to be posted by Tuesday, August 28, 2012 on the band and orchestra bulletin boards outside the Rehearsal Hall.

* Concert Band

 2 credits.
  • Open to all, but not recommended for non-music majors because of the extensive rehearsals and performances.
  • Audition required - highly selective. Single screened audition for both this and Symphony Band. Audition sign-up sheets to be posted by Monday, November 14 on the band and orchestra bulletin boards outside the Rehearsal Hall.

University and Campus Bands

 1 credit.
  • Primarily for non-music majors who desire a concert band experience; open to the entire UM community
  • Enroll in  ENS 346.001 (this is the umbrella course number for all Campus Bands)
  • University Band is the most advanced non-music-major band and placement is by audition
  • Campus Band placement is by audition for chair placement but NOT REQUIRED
  • Piano, harp and String Bass players are encouraged to participate
  • Fall Rehearsal Schedule:
    • Campus Band, Wednesday, 7:30-9:30 PM
    • University Band, Thursday, 7:00-9:00 PM
  • Winter Rehearsal Schedule:
    • "Blue" Campus Band, Wednesday, 6:00-8:00 PM
    • "Maize" Campus Band, Wednesday, 8:00-10:00 PM
    • University Band, Thursday, 8:00-10:00 PM
  • All rehearsals take place in Revelli Hall (Hoover Street)
  • Auditions arranged during the Informational Meeting on the first Wednesday of classes. Fall Information Meeting will be Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 7:30 PM in Revelli Hall.
  • Audition materials (for UBand and principal positions and chair placement for the Campus Bands) will be posted on the cTools site for ENS 346.001 a month before the term begins.

Marching Band

 2 credits.

 

 

Athletic (Pep) Bands

 1 credit.
  • Open to all University of Michigan students
  • Call 734/764-0582 after 1 PM for audition information. Auditions are held in August and September
