Critical analysis of the history and philosophy of music education in North America.


Teaching Music in Higher Education (MUSED 595), 2 cr. hrs.                                        Prof. Richardson
Includes an examination of theories of music teaching and learning, adult learning styles, developmental stages experienced by undergraduate students, and discussion of issues in the teaching of music in higher education. This course is designed to satisfy the training/orientation requirement for graduate student teaching instructors.

 

Winter semester 2008

The Psychology of Music Teaching and Learning (MUSED 501/801), 3 cr. hrs.             Prof. Richardson

Rackham students elect MUSED 801.

This course is designed to enable students to 1) examine critically a wide range of theoretical and research-based literature on various constructs within the psychology of music teaching and learning; 2) formulate research questions based on their teaching experience and outline various studies that could answer these; 3) use the theoretical and research-based literature to develop a high level of skill in textual analysis, critical reflection and scholarly writing; and 4) engage in teaching experiences aimed at enhancing their students' creative and critical thinking in music.

 

Curriculum Development in Music Education (MUSED 503/803), 3 cr. hrs.                    Prof. Conway

Rackham students elect MUSED 803.

This seminar on music curriculum and assessment concentrates on the issues involved in developing appropriate music curricula forstudents in grades K-12. It will include the study and discussion of the following: Curriculum: Definition, History, Theory, Design in Music, Research on Curriculum in Music, Writing Curriculum in Music. Methodology: Student presentations of various approaches and curricular areas possibly including: Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, Gordon Music Learning Theory, Suzuki Talent Education, and others. Assessment: Types of Assessment, Grading Procedures, Connection of Assessment and Curriculum, Basic Concepts of Measurement and Evaluation.
