The School of Music, Theatre & Dance is taking a leadership role on sustainability issues by eliminating all applications of pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers to the lawns around the Moore Building, surpassing the campus-wide goal of a 40 percent reduction in the use of lawn chemicals. Students from the Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute's "Environment 391" class, taught be Professor Mike Shriberg and under the guidance of Professor Evan Chambers and Dean Christopher Kendall, created a study of current landscaping around Moore. The goal was to reduce chemical runoff into the Moore Pond and the adjacent Huron River and to generate recommendations for reducing mowing, as well as possible future use of lower-maintenance and more sustainable native plantings. U-M Planner Sue Gott, along with grounds supervisors Robert Doletzky and Marvin Pettway, and university landscape architect Kenneth Rapp, provided strong support and cooperation in moving forward with implementation. "We are grateful to Evan Chambers for his leadership in this initiative,” said Dean Kendall. “Not only does it enable the School to provide a model to the campus on environmental issues, but just as critically, Professor Chambers has set an example for our students, inspiring their development as ‘artist-citizens.’”
