SMTD at UMMA

October 2010

Faculty from the School of Music, Theatre & Dance will be presented by the U-M Museum of Art in a series of programs. The first, on Saturday, October 16, is Jazz Age Paris. Jazz was welcomed and adopted by Paris as an expatriate American musical genre as early as the 1920s, affording African-American musicians the serious critical acclaim absent in the United States. James Dapogny, professor emeritus, and the Rhythm Kings will perform music as it was heard and performed in 1920s Paris; Andrew Bishop will lead jazz students in music from post-war Paris (arrive at 7:30 for a pre-concert talk). Other collaborations will include the U-M Percussion Ensemble on Tuesday, October 16, with Expatriations; pianist and composer Logan Skelton, joined by Jennifer Goltz, soprano, and Stephen Lusmann, baritone, on Sunday, November 14, performing compositions set to American poetry; jazz bassist and Grammy Award-winner Robert Hurst is featured on Wednesday, November 17; and Saturday, December 4, Joshua Major’s voice students present the Romeo and Juliet Project. All are at 8:00 p.m. except for Romeo and Juliet, which is Saturday, December 4, at 7:00 p.m. For full details, visit: http://www.umma.museum/programs-and-tours/events/
