Two Premieres Written for China Tour to be Performed This Friday

The U-M Symphony Band performs this Friday at 8:00 at Hill Auditorium (free, no tickets required) in a concert featuring two premieres slated for the tour to China in May. Michael Haithcock, conducts Kristin Kuster’s Two Jades, for solo violin and symphony band, featuring violin virtuoso and alumnus Xiang Gao. Also hear the premiere of Bright Sheng’s Shanghai Overture, rewritten for symphony band. Both Kuster and Sheng, members of the SMTD composition faculty, will lead a pre-concert discussion of these new works at 7:15 in the lower lobby at Hill; Xiang Gao will be present. Also on the program: Susato, selections from Dansyere; Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor; Massanet’s “Mediation” from Thais; and Ives’s Variations on America.
