Symphony Band to Tour China!

February 2011

Preview of Tour Repertoire

Friday, February 4, Hill Auditorium, 8:00 p.m.

The University Symphony Band, under the direction of Michael Haithcock, is preparing for a historical tour to China in May 2011. Here’s a chance to preview two of the works—Michael Daugherty’s Lost Vegas and a new arrangement for symphony band of William Bolcom’s Concerto Grosso—that the SB will perform during that tour. For all details about the upcoming China tour, visit music.umich.edu/china; read about the tour and the touring tradition since the time of William D. Revelli.

From George Gershswin, Charles Ives, and John Phillip Sousa to new works by contemporary prize-winning composers William Bolcom, Michael Daugherty, and Joseph Schwantner, the rich variety of American music merges with the virtuosity of the Symphony Band for an evening of musical fireworks worthy of the Fourth of July! Hear about these new works from two of the composers, William Bolcom and Michael Daugherty, in a pre-concert discussion at 7:15 in the lower lobby of Hill. PROGRAM: Gershwin - Cuban Overture; Schwantner - In Evening’s Stillness; Daugherty - Lost Vegas; Ives - Variations on America; Bolcom - Concerto Grosso for Saxophone Quartet and Band; Three American Marches
