Opera Auditions Master Class
November 2010
Diane Zola, BM ’75, MM ’76 (voice), Artistic Administrator of Houston Grand Opera, visited the School of Music, Theatre & Dance on November 19 for a Jessye Norman Master Class on opera auditions. Zola has adjudicated vocal competitions, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She knows what panels are looking for.

Seven SMTD voice students sang at the well-attended master class in Britton Hall. In a highly competitive business, Ms. Zola reminded students of what is most important: “Sing from your heart. I want to hear a voice that speaks to me. What other reason is there to sing?” In an audition situation, she told students, be yourself. Relax. Let your own personality shine through. Professionalism is expected: dress appropriately; assess your appearance, this is a very visual society; be there early—“Being on time is being late,” she quipped. And make sure your resume and headshot are up to par. Spend the money to get a professional headshot, with your name on it.
She counseled against including a list of voice teachers on a resume; audition judges know most teachers and may form biases based on the names you mention. Speak at least one other language fluently, she said. If you are in this field to make big bucks, “get out now!” And, as with everything, bring balance to your life and your art. As to repertoire, she counseled away from new or unfamiliar works in lieu of pieces from the standard repertoire that best show off your vocal range and color.
