Final Concerts of the Season

April 2011

We’re in the final push of the academic year here at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, with exams and student recitals looming (Why not come? They’re free and quite exceptional; all are listed in the SMTD calendar.). The University Symphony Orchestra presents a program, The Force of Destiny, on Friday, April 15, 8:00 p.m. at Hill Auditorium, in a concert of the dramatic music of fate, destiny, and star-crossed lovers, with Verdi’s Forza del Destino Overture, Michael Daugherty’s Fire and Blood, with Anna Skalova, violinist and Concerto Competition Winner, Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod, and Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2. Free; no tickets required.

The University Philharmonia, under the direction of Christopher James Lees, will perform its final concert on Sunday, April 17, 3:00 p.m., at Hill Auditorium. The centerpiece is Jennifer Higdon’s strikingly beautiful commemoration of her brother’s life, cut dramatically short and represented here by the solo clarinet, performed by Sean Krissman, another Concerto Competition Winner. Also on the program:  Debussy’s Premiere Rapsodie and Franck’s Symphony in D Minor. Free; no tickets required.
