Symphony Band Releases New CD
June 2010
The University of Michigan Symphony Band has just released a new CD, Classic Structures. Michael Haithcock, Director of Bands, leads the USB in works by composers William Bolcom, Jennifer Higdon, David Ludwig, and Dana Wilson. Bolcom’s First Symphony for Band, commissioned by the Big 10 Band Directors Association, received its world premiere in Ann Arbor in 2008, performed by the USB at Hill Auditorium. It is one of two works on the CD by Pulitzer Prize winners. The other is Jennifer Higdon’s Oboe Concerto, featuring Nancy Ambrose King, professor of oboe. Dana Wilson, composer and jazz pianist, wrote the CD’s Concerto for Horn. David Ludwig, who studied with Jennifer Higdon, Ned Rorem, and John Corigliano, wrote Missa Brevis. The works represented here continue the Symphony Band’s tradition of commissioning new works for symphony band by both up-and-coming and established composers. The CD is available for download on iTunes and amazon.com.
