First Female Tubist for the Philadelphia Orchestra Returns to  Alma Mater for Performance and Master Class

January 2010

Praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer as having “a sound as clear and sure as it is luxurious,” Carol Jantsch, BM ‘06, has been principal tuba of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 2006, winning the audition while still a student studying with Fritz Kaenzig. She is the first female tuba player in a major symphony orchestra. Her playing has been described as “by turns elegant, assertive, expansive, and nimble” (examiner.com). Jantsch just released a solo CD called Cascades.

Carol will be at the SMTD on Sunday, January 24, for a guest appearance with David Gilliland, piano, in a recital that will include works by Bozza, Penderecki, Shostakovich, and Vaughan Williams’s Concerto for bass tuba, at 8:00 in Britton Recital Hall. On Monday, Jantsch will lead a tuba master class in Stamps Auditorium at the Walgreen Drama Center at 4:30.
