Gypsy Pond Music X

October 2008

If you haven’t yet experienced this annual phenomenon, you must make it a point to come by the School this year. This ‘happening’ is actually a well-planned and researched event, the culmination of a performing arts technology class, taught by Professor Stephen Rush, which spends fall semester immersed in readings concerning the labyrinth tradition in many cultures. The pond behind the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, originally designed in the shape of a grand piano, serves as a blank canvas for the inventiveness of students in Rush’s Digital Music Ensemble. A multi-media sonic installation involving electronic music, light/movement sensors, and sculpture, Gyspy Pond Music celebrates its tenth anniversary, this year focusing its attention on awe and wonder and "mythic digestion/comprehension." Four stations combining the four elements will be set up to provide interactive "playing" of the piece for all visitors. The Pond will be "dressed up" as usual. This piece uses high-end electronics, computer-based audio, and mythic exploration. Last year’s display included floating innertubes and computer controlled floating lights. You have to see it to believe it.

Gypsy Pond Music X runs Wednesday, October 22 through Sunday, October 26.  The installation begins at noon and runs until 9:00 p.m. each day.
