Senior Carol Jantsch wins Principal Tuba position with the Philadelphia Orchestra

Carol Jantsch, age 20, won the coveted Principal Tuba position with the Philadelphia Orchestra, with whom she has been playing subsitute tuba for part of this season.  She is the first female tuba player with any major American symphony orchestra.  Jantsch, an honors student at the University of Michigan School of Music, studies with Professor Fritz Kaenzig.  Her many honors and accomplishments include Second Place in the International Performer's Competition at the Morovian Music Festival (2005);  First Place in the Potomac Festival International Tuba Competition; 2005 Yamaha Young Performing Artist; runner-up for the tuba position in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in 2005; and first prizes at the Der Internationaler Instrumentalwettbewerb Markneukirchen (2004), the Tuba Artist Competition at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Budapest (2004) and the Tuba Artist Competition at the Leonard Falcone International Euphomium and Tuba Festival (2004).
